SUMMARY:Jeneba Kanneh-Mason plays Mozart
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to welcome Jeneba Kanneh-Mason\, who plays one of Mozart’s most sublime piano concertos – and on Mozart’s birthday.  Robert Weaver conducts\,  in a programme of Beethoven’s Fidelio Overture\, Mozart’s 23rd Piano Concerto and Brahms 1st Symphony. \nJeneba Kanneh-Mason is already captivating audiences with her “maturity in performance and interpretation”.   She performed Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in the 2021 Proms\, was a Keyboard Category Finalist in BBC Young Musician 2018 (aged 15) and a winner of the Murs du Son Prize at the Lagny-Sur-Marne International Piano Competition in France\, 2014. \nRobert Weaver makes a welcome return\, after conducting us in a memorable programme last January at the Sheldonian that featured Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto (played by Jennifer Pike) and Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony. \nThis concert will be a treat!  All tickets include programme and accompanied (school-age) children are free.  Seating is unallocated.

SUMMARY:John Warner conducts Mendelssohn and Schumann
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back John Warner to conduct us in a programme of Mendelssohn’s Overture and Scherzo from a Midsummer Night’s Dream\, Ravel’s Pavane\, Chausson’s Poème for violin (soloist Roma Tic) and orchestra\, Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Schumann’s Symphony No 4. \nTwo aspects of Romanticism will be contrasted in this programme: the music of two early Romantic German composers\, Mendelssohn and Schumann\, and works from the end of the 19th century by two French composers\, Chausson and Ravel. Mendelssohn’s glorious incidental music for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and his evocative Hebrides Overture are justly famous. Ravel’s haunting Pavane for a Dead Infanta is instantly accessible\, while Chausson’s Poème is his most celebrated work\, encored three times at an early performance! Schumann’s 4th Symphony will be presented in its original 1841 version\, often preferred for its more transparent scoring and fresher sound. \nJohn Warner is Founder and Artistic Director of Orchestra for the Earth and Music Director of Oxford Opera. He has conducted orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic and regularly assists conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle and Daniel Harding. \n
